Rose & Thistle Annual BBQ & Race Night

FIRE !!!!!!!

That was the word of the night as the BBQ went with a bang. Phil Gray very kindly allowed us rowdy lot round to his place for the 1st Annual BBQ and this was combined with a fund raising Race Night and a raffle.

A very good turn out for this 1st Annual BBQ night, with about 20 odd people turning up. Phil “ I love Crossley” Gray had the drinks and food already sorted out and the big Gas BBQ in the corner just waiting for the off. John “ Oh your shirt says Umbro not Jumbo” Davison very kindly sorted out his laptop and a projector ready for the horse racing whilst The Holmanator went round and mugged people of their money for the big raffle at the end.

Around 8pm Phil lit the BBQ, the gas cylinder sprung a leak up went a ball of flame nearly singeing off his eyebrows.. “Hmmmm, OK I know lets try the trick of piling the charcoal really high and setting fire to it” said Phil followed by manic laughter from Bobby. It was fine until they started adding Meths to “get it going” ....Oh dear, there goes your parole Bobby!

During this time the first race was under way with Sara the bookie getting a nice trade.. a stewards inquiry at the end found no probs as John, along with Adam and Natasha, came away with the winnings!

Still, the BBQ was alight with flames licking the sky, the white spirits had run out and so Buncey and Bobby came away to watch the racing. Finally, with the flames out, the food was put on and cooking was underway thanks to Dan “Just call me F**king Ramsey” Marshall... after all he did train to be a cook. The racing continued throughout the night with a certain Mr Awesome winning races and I reckon was at least £100 up by the end of the night... alas the same can’t be said for Capt Waygood... his horses kept coming in Second.

The food came and went, chicken, steaks, sausages & burgers. Drinks were a plenty from the Blue barrel and Phil’s own stash and the racing finished with Awesome having fleeched us all. With a fanfare it was onto the raffle!

Plenty of prizes, thanks to Nick, with a special Mystery prize..

The rumor in the crowd was that the mystery prize was a 1st team place for the opening game of the season... Rik “Brentford Boy” ear’s pricked up and set his heart on that box

Winners came and went but still no one dared to pick the box, until Mr Awesome stepped up... I know, I know..he won loads on the races and now won the raffle. Jonny wanted THAT box, he wanted a place in the team following his parents telling him he wasn’t good enough this year with the squad we’ve got...Go Positive Parenting!

He chose the box, he opened it up but alas it wasn’t a team spot.. it was worth more than that .. it was ... two sets of Real Pig’s ears. “That’s Great” said Jonny “ People are always telling me I make a Pig’s Ear of tackling, defending, heading & tying up my boots.. this is wonderful!”

Nick was standing there ever hopeful that Jonny would lend him a pair ready for his defending this coming year..but no.

The night drew on with people leaving around midnight, except the hard few who stayed on drinking beer, discussing who should play where this season... the gas bbq was now dying down, the side of the house was black, along with the chicken. It was a good night, we also raised £100 for the club towards the next social event. Thanks to Phil for having us, Dan for cooking, John for the race night and Nick for the raffle.
