       Wheatsheaf Reserves 2 v 4 Rose & Thistle           (Friendly)

This was going to be a tough game against good opposition and considering the heart was ripped out of the midfield due to players away for the morning game it was an even bigger hill to climb. That said Thistle always seem to play even better when their backs are against the wall. The manager drafted in George “Galloway” Walker, a player he tried to sign in the summer, to help out with the numbers. Would George roll back the years?

Formation set out as 442 but without the midfielders from the last game it was a great chance for those guys playing there to prove themselves worthy of a place. The team this week Conetta, Leach, Gray, Harris, Walker, Mehta, Winnard, Holman, Marsden, Scales, Allery Subs..Bunce, Davison, Pickett. Buncey starting as sub as he has an injury, Pickett and Conetta sharing the keeping.

1st Half - We got off to a good start, lots of talking, positive play and the midfield looking very comfortable. Davison having to Ref the game also looked good with not much hassle from either side. Both sides had good chances as the game opened up. Mehta was spellbinding down the right, making runs on and off the ball, the best we’ve seen of him. George at left back was definitely rolling back the years with a solid game at left back, not needing any hand holding and allowing Phil G to concentrate on his game. Wheatsheaf opened up the scoring though against the run of play, a break through the centre found their centre forward to put it past Toni, 1-0 to them. Would Thistle crumble... not on your life, a new team spirit one of confidence and desire. George played a good ball down the left wing to Allery, he worked hard to create space and then put in a low cross. Who was in there... Paul Mehta that’s who... he drove it into the net..1-1. More was to come as Thistle pressed on. A corner towards the end of the half from Scales was headed back towards the back post and again that man Mehta dived full length past the keeper..2-1 Thistle!

2nd Half - Change of keeper at half time, Pickett in Goal, Conetta off. Toni was to play a part later on. The manager impressed with the team performance.

Second half underway and still the Ref had to point out to Wheatsheaf that gaining 5 yards from a throw is unacceptable, would they learn..nah. Wheatsheaf came back quickly after the kick off and some pretty average defending found them space to drill home past Pickett into the bottom right hand corner, 2-2 game on! Again, rather than give up Thistle keep pressing. Winnard came off with blisters and so on came Conetta as left Wing to work well with Walker at left back. Allery looking to score as many goals as possible soon had a chance when the Ref gave a freekick on the edge of the box after a foul on the striker. He placed it down, the wall only 7 yards back, the kick left his boot and in Allery’s own words “ I am special. I knew that with my kick I score goals from anywhere, no keeper on earth would get close to it.. simple see! You may now get down on your knees and worship me!”. The ball curled into the top corner, 3-2 Thistle in front. More was to come from Dan “Call me God” Allery. A flick on by Marsden found Allery and this time with his trade mark stumble and trip around the defence he slotted it home..4-2 Thistle and Wheatsheaf stunned.

The match was played out and a great result at the final whistle. It bodes well for this season IF we play like this. Don’t forget this comes about by working hard for a full 90 mins and playing as a team.

M.O.M - Mehta and Walker. Outstanding play by both, the best yet from Paul and George an accomplished left back... we need him to sign on!
